Argent Attends the 58th Annual “Heckerling” Estate Planning Conference

By Argent Wealth Management, LLC on January 26, 2024

Several Argent employees attended the 58th annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning ™ conference that took place January 8-12 at the Orlando world Center Marriott.  Argent staff have been attending this conference for over 20 years.

The Heckerling Institute is an educational conference for estate planners, and comprehensively covers today’s most important tax and non-tax planning issues.  Staying up to date with modern estate planning techniques, law changes, and potential law changes is critical to keep our client’s “buttoned up.”

For example, congress recently passed the Corporate Transparency Act.  It requires certain business entities to file, in the absence of an exemption, information on their “beneficial owners” with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen) of the U.S. Department of Treasury.  The intention is to cut down on bad actors using corporations for money laundering and other illicit activities.  There are major penalties for those that do not follow the filing requirements.

If you have any questions about this please reach out to us for guidance.

Other topics included:

  • The significant tax and non-tax developments of 2023
  • Valuable insight into what might lie ahead.
  • Trusts:  Innovative techniques for planning, drafting, and administering trusts in today’s environment.
    • Tax efficient ways to transfer wealth.
    • Practical tools, a look ahead, and how to plan for changes in law.
    • Maximizing benefits, minimizing risks of various trust structures.
    • GRATs, SLATs, CRUTs, Revocable Trusts, Irrevocable Trusts.
  • Techniques for charitable giving and philanthropy.
  • Planning for retirement benefits
    • Specifically navigating Secure Act 2.0 with current proposed regulations still pending.  Relief was provided for 2021-2023 for any RMDs not taken by taxpayers for inherited IRAs that occurred post-Secure Act. However taxpayers are still awaiting direction on the 10 year rule for inherited IRAs (non-spouse) where the decedent has already begun RMDs as to whether the designated beneficiary needs to take annual RMDs or extinguish the account by year 10.

If you or someone you know has an estate plan that should be reviewed or are interested in hearing about the latest estate planning techniques, reach out to us.
